The Department of Science and Technology recently announced following details:

  • Ongoing KVPY fellows will continue receiving their fellowship as per DST norms.
  • Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) will be taken in place of KVPY.

What is the KVPY exam?

KVPY stands for Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana. Started in the year 1999 by the prestigious Indian Institute of Science- IISc Bangalore, this exam focuses on providing scholarships to the students who are excellent in the field of Science and Technology and wish to take up a career in the research field.

The KVPY Exam used to be taken at three different streams: SA, SB and SX.

All the students from class 11 to the first year of pure science fields like: BSc, B Math, Integrated MSc, etc. can appear for this exam and the top performers are selected for the fellowship program.

So, What is the INSPIRE exam?

The INSPIRE exam stands for Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) which is a fellowship programme that is taken by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

It encourages Indian kids to pursue science from an early age to strengthen their knowledge base in Science and Technology and to build interest in the Research & Development field.

It is speculated that the high operating costs of KVPY contributed to the decision by the Government.

What about the current KVPY fellows?

Well, DCT has made it clear that the current fellows will continue to receive fellowship as per the regular norms.

The students who received the fellowship grant up to 2021 will continue to be receiving the grant, said DCT.

To conclude, From 2022 and onwards, KVPY will be replaced by INSPIRE and will be conducted by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. IISc Bangalore will be the Institute which will be helping out for conducting this exam.

So, students need not to panic! They need to stay focused and start their Olympiad preparations which will eventually cover their KVPY or INSPIRE exam syllabus.
